How the Department of Defense Supports Military and Community Compatible Use

Department of Defense (DoD) programs seek to improve compatibility between military installations and surrounding communities at local and regional levels. Program awards support community outreach, communication, and partnerships, and apply other tools and methods to address compatibility factors agreed to by the DoD and federal, state, and local partners. Compatibility programs are administered by the OLDCC and the REPI Program Office. While both offices fall under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Sustainment (ASD(Sustainment)), each military branch leads its own compatibility initiative in collaboration with the Secretary of Defense. Compatibility programs administered by the DoD leverage multiple funding sources, including donations and in-kind services to meet all project goals. Program applications are accepted from communities, non-governmental organizations, and nonprofits. The selection process to award and implement projects is based on multiple factors - both quantitative and qualitative. DoD offices regularly review awarded projects, provide additional guidance or assistance, and confirm that implementation is progressing as expected.
